Lomonosow Moscow State University

Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov is Russia’s first and biggest classical university.
On January 25th (or January 12 in the Old Style), 1775, Russian Empress Elizabeth signed a decree to establish a university in Moscow designated to satisfy a demand for «national worthy scholars». The great scientist of encyclopedic knowledge M. Lomonosov and the prominent state official I. Shuvalov are considered the founders of Moscow State University: Lomonosov’s scientific acumen and Shuvalov’s progressive views ensured the success of their undertaking.

Classes began in the spring of 1775, in a building near the Voskresenskiye Gate in Red Square where the State History Museum is situated now. In 1976, the library of Moscow State University was opened and it remained the only public library in the city for more than a century.

Moscow Imperial University took a most active part in developing higher education in Russia. When new educational institutions were founded in Russia, Moscow State University graduates largely formed the academic staff there. Our university gave birth to about 60 higher educational institutions, including the largest in Russia: Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Moscow Geological Academy, Moscow Physical-Technical Institute, Ulyanovsk University and many others.

In the 19ì century, scientific societies were formed and they began to gain international recognition. There are not only scientists but also outstanding public figures participating in their activity, among them Leo Tolstoy who presented his paper «On the Notion of Life». The University honorary members included I. Goethe, A. Humboldt, Ch. Darwin, N. Zhukovski, T. Faraday, D. Mendeleyev, J. Lamarck, D. Maxwell and others.

Concurrently, academic schools arose, which would soon be the glory of not only Russian, but also of the world science. A. Stoletov, P. Lebedev, I. Sechenov, K. Timiryazev, N. Zelinski, V. Vernadski, S. Solovyov and A. Klyuchevski and many others worked here at that time. Any of these names makes a page in the chronicle of our science or humanities. Their scientific achievements are part of the Russian history and the nation’s pride.

The University initiated and supported the foundation of well-known Moscow museums: Moscow Polytechnic, Historical, Zoological and Anthropological museums as well as Botanical and Zoological Gardens. University professor Ivan Tsvetayev founded the Museum of Fine Arts.

The Maly Theater’s first cast was made up of the members of the University Amateur Theater Company.

In the 19thth century, Moscow State University became a unique cultural phenomenon, which gave an impetus for social development not only to Moscow but to Russia as well. Among the

University students were D. Fonvizin, V. Zhukovski, A. Griboedov, M. Lermontov, A. Ostrovski, I. Turgenev, A. Chekhov, B. Pasternak. It was here that A. Pushkin debated the authenticity of «Slovo î Polku Igoreve» with the University professors.

In 1950-s, when a new university campus was constructed on the Lenin Hills, scientific research intensified, the scientific thought was stepping up to challenges in the new knowledge areas- in both fundamental and applied science. The University researchers make a considerable contribution to space exploration, to the study of atomic nucleus structure, to the development of computers and many other branches of science.

Among the outstanding scientists of the 20th’ century are A. Kolmogorov, N. Bogolyubov, P. Kapitsa, M. Keldysh, L. Landau, I. Tamm, A. Nesmeyanov, N. Semyonov, A. Tikhonov, À. Losev, S. Averintzev and many others. Out of 18 Russian Nobel Prize winners, 11 are Moscow University graduates or professors.

In the later 20th century, with drastic changes in the political and economic life of the country, Moscow State University (MSU) faced a new challenge — to keep up the high level of traditional university education and at the same time meet the requirements of the day. Recently, 12 new faculties have been established, to address the most promising areas of research. They include Faculties of Materials Science, Bioengineering and Bioinformatics, Moscow School of Economics, the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts and others.

Fundamental research in sciences and humanities provides a strong foundation for students’ instruction at Moscow State University. The indissoluble connection of fundamental education and fundamental research ensures the training of highly qualified specialists who are prepared to meet the challenge of knowledge-based society. Moscow University Degree guarantees the high level of graduates’ expertise.

Moscow State University continues the search for new vistas in education and research, supports interdisciplinary research projects, develops innovative activities. Moscow State University (MSU) was the first in Russia to establish a the Science Park and a powerful information system.

Collaboration with Russian Academy of Sciences, joint research projects are of key significance. MSU — RAS integration ensures success in the development of science and education in the country. Over 300 members of Russian Academy of Sciences and other national academies work at the University.

The university develops its cooperation with universities in Russia and abroad. To date, over 350 agreements have been concluded with universities in 75 countries. Over the recent years, the number of international students at MSU has doubled, totaling 5,000 from 80 countries.

Special attention is being paid to the links with universities in the CIS countries. In cooperation with them, the Eurasian Universities’ Association was set up. Moscow State University opened its Black Sea branch in Sebastopol (Ukraine) and Kazakhstan branch in Astana.

MSU has also opened its representative offices and centres in China, Switzerland and the USA.

The growing number of students and faculties, the scale of research projects as well as the advance of international contacts determines a further development of the University.

The campus expansion is a new benchmark in the University history. To celebrate the 250th jubilee, a superb new facility has been built for the University’s Intellectual Center, that is, its Fundamental Library. A few more buildings will soon appear near it, including a Medical Center with the state-of-the-art facilities.

Moscow State University celebrates its 250n anniversary enjoying the status of a major instruction and research center, with its 28 faculties, 10 research institutes, 40,000 students and a unique team of professors, teachers and research fellows — 9,000 of them with candidate’s and doctor’s degrees.

During 250 years of its history, Moscow State University has served the Nation. Over the period, the Russian science has become part of the national and world heritage. Education based on fundamental research has secured a leadership position for the University in the world educational space. All those who have been privileged to study and work at Moscow State University, cherish the unique creative atmosphere, the university aura, which unites, invisibly yet firmly, us all — the spirit of our Alma Mater.

Russian Language Centre was founded in 1990 by the Moscow University. At its work Centre rely on the richest experience in teaching foreign citizens of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. The Centre turn its efforts on achievement of the goals set by the headquarters of the University headed by the rector of MSU, full member of the Russian academy of science V.A. Sadovnichy.

New design of the web-site of the MSU Russian Language Centre was wade by the 20th anniversary after foundation of the Centre. According to Russian and foreign experts web-site is one of the best in Russian education. This is achieved because of the richest support that the headquarters of the University give to the Centre.

Over the last 20 years Russian Language Centre of Moscow Lomonosov State University («MGU-Russian») has been on the wave of mounting interest and demand in Russian language, receiving annually about 700 students from more than 50 countries.

BOTANICAL GARDENS OF MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1706, the Botanical Gardens of Moscow state university is one of the oldest botanical institutions of our country. It is widely known for its scientific and educational activities. When MGU new premises at the Lenin Hills were constructed, a new University garden was laid out. More than 6000 plant species, varieties and cultivars were planted in a territory of about 40 hectares. Much research is under way at the Gardens. Its collection provides a practical and training base for the MGU Faculty of Biology, and other higher education establishments in Moscow. This remarkable island of wildlife is open not only to scientists and students, but also to visitors who can enjoy guided tours, introducing them to a diverse world of plants.

The departments of the Gardens at the Lenin Hills (an arboretum, plots of mountain plants, a taxonomic collection, plots of useful plants, ornamental plants and an orchard) demonstrate their plant diversity to the visitors and show achievements in the field of applied botany. The arboretum has a collection of species and forms of trees and shrubs running to over 1000. Also widely represented are wild herbaceous plants from a variety of areas around the globe. Through years of work at the arboretum, MSU specialists have gained valuable hands-on experience in parkland development. The plot of mountain plants is organized on a geographic basis and contains more than 1000 species of alpine and subalpine plants from the Carpathians, Crimea, Caucasus, Central Asia and Far East. The taxonomic collection gives an idea of a plants system as a whole as well as of the evolution of the main family groups. In the collection there are more than 500 plant species belonging to 100 families of flowering plants. The plot of useful plants comprises more than 500 species, varieties and kinds of natural flora used by the man for various purposes. Ornamental plants are displayed at the rosary and plots of ornamental perennials. The best foreign and Russian roses, peonies, tulips etc. are shown there. The best Russian and foreign fruit plants, some of which were bred by the Gardens' staff, grow in the orchard.

Tropical and subtropical plants can be seen at the hothouses of the Gardens' Affiliate (26 Mira Prospect). These hothouses are located exactly where Peter the Great laid out his «herbal garden» in 1706. The garden was given to Moscow University in 1805. After the new premises for Moscow State University were built and a new garden was laid out, the former Botanical Gardens, a historical and cultural monument of Moscow, became its branch. The achievements of the Gardens are marked by domestic and foreign awards and diplomas. The Gardens coordinate activities of 19 botanical gardens of Central European Russia.
