Accommodation in the MGU main building dormitory
This is a very basic kind of accommodation and it allows to save a lot of money and provides an easy way to meet a lot of young people. The quality of accommodation really depends on the university. In Moscow (especially MGU) dormitories are quite good and can be compared to the ones in American universities (though in Russia they are much less expensive).
The main campus is located in the Vorobyevy Hills region of prestigious area of Moscow. It is a giant conglomerate of many buildings hosting varies departments, labs, sport and dormitory facilities. The main building is the highlight. It is one of the 7 tallest and impressive constructions in Russia.
The nearest metro stop is Universitet located on the red line 20-25 minutes from the city center. According to all national and international surveys, Lomonosov Moscow State University is ranked first in Russia and among the top ten in the world with annual enrolment of approximately 60,000 students.
Advantages:
- In the Main building there are a number of offices of communal services: laundry, household shop, repair shop, stationery shop, hairdressing saloon, centre of hire (bicycle, roller skates), photo studio, post and delivery services, services of long-distance communication.
- Students live in the two-room block for two persons, sharing a shower with a neighbour. Each room in a block is closed on key. Bed linen is provided by the dormitory.
- On each floor of the dormitory there are kitchens for general use, where students have an opportunity to cook.
- In the Main building there are a number of canteens, lunchrooms.
For active rest it is not necessary to leave the territory of MGU. There are:
- One of the best tennis-courts in Moscow (seven ground and one grass court).
- Solarium.
- Swimming-pool.
Library of the Lomonosov Moscow State University
Library of the Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of the oldest among university libraries in Russia. It was founded in 1756.
Currently the library serves more than 60 thousand regular visitors. The number of visitors is as high as 1,8 m people a year; with lending at approximately 4 m. copies for the same period. There are 16 lending rooms and 60 reading rooms which can accommodate 3,300 readers. The library collection is available to all academic and scientific staff as well as students of the University.
The university library collection includes up to 8,5 m. academic and scientific publications - 2,5 m of which are books written in Russian language and foreign languages. The library collection is subdivided into branches distributed among 15 buildings of the University. Every library branch section has a reading room, a branch section index and a thematic catalogue, a lending room and the information and bibliographic section.
The University library has a unique collection of rare books and manuscripts of more than 200 thousand storage units including medieval, Greek, Latin, French, German, Oriental and Slav manuscripts, the Russian manuscripts of the 18-19th centuries, archive materials of the 18-19th centuries, West-European incunabula and palaeotypes, the Slav and Russian early printed books, and rare Russian publications of the 18-20th centuries.
Accommodation
The University's hall of residence includes five students' quarters, - each accommodating students of a particular faculty or a subdivision of the University. The total number of students accommodated in the University hostel is about 15,000. The living conditions in the hostel may vary in the level of comfort, the living space, additional conveniences and facilities (telephone, TV set, refrigerator), with the cost of accommodation being dependent on all these factors.
Food service of the Moscow University
The food service of the University includes 11 canteens and 16 buffets and snack-shops. In every University building one can have tasty and cheap food. The schedule of every eating place is adapted to provide for the needs of everyone who would like to eat at any time between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Medical service
The University's polyclinics is located on the campus Leninskie Gory. The key medical services of physicians, neurologists, oculists, surgeons, otolaryngologists, therapists, gynaecologists, traumatologists, dermatologists, gastroenterologists, psychotherapeutists, allergologists, urologists, dentists are available for all students of the University. International students have two options:
- Bring an international insurance policy (make sure it works in Russia) and use the clinics stated by it;
- Buy medical insurance policy at the University polyclinics for a period of 1 year for US$150.
Culture, museums and The Student Theatre of Moscow University
Museums, recreation centre, student theatre and cinema hall provide almost everything that students would need for recreation and entertainment.
Four museums are functioning: Museum of Earth Science, Museum of Anthropology, Museum of Zoology and Museum of Rare Books.
The Student Theatre of the University is the oldest in Russia. The first public performance took place on 26th January, 1756 staged by the students themselves. Since that time theatre activity of the University never stopped. The Theatre yields new names and new ideas. Many famous actors of Russia have been brought up here. The Theatre stages plays of Russian and foreign authors. The Student Theatre has successfully performed at many big theatre festivals of Europe and organised the first international festival of student theatres in Moscow.
The University Recreation Centre (DK) unites students and teachers of the University who come here to spend their spare time in all kinds of creative activity. At the beginning of every academic year DK announces enrolment for the Academic choir, chamber orchestra, piano, vocal and organ classes, opera studio, creative union "The Russian Souvenir", the Theatre of Old Music, Student's Theatre workshops, literary studio, school-studio of the modern ball-room dancing and other activities.
The main performance Hall of DK annually houses concerts of professional actors of various genres and the performances of the amateur creative unions. Foreign students also take part in amateur theatricals.
Sports and Recreation
The undergraduate students' curriculum includes classes of physical training. Along with it students usually choose to participate in various sport sections. There are nearly 30 sports sections specialising in different sports, 2 swimming pools, 12 sports halls, football stadium, tennis courts, baseball stadium, volley-ball and baseball grounds available.
